Annus Mirabilis

Annus mirabilis is Latin for "year of wonders" or "wonderful year," used to describe a year in which an unusual concentration of important, often era-defining events or achievements occurred.[1] The phrase entered English through John Dryden's 1667 poem of the same name, and has since become the standard label for two of the most productive years in the history of science: Isaac Newton's 1665–1667 and Albert Einstein's 1905.[2][3]
Etymology and Dryden's poem
The phrase joins Latin annus ("year") with mirabilis ("wonderful, marvelous," from mirari, "to wonder at"). The Oxford English Dictionary credits John Dryden's 1667 poem Annus Mirabilis: The Year of Wonders, 1666 as the first recorded use of the phrase in English.[1]
Dryden composed the 1,216-line poem, arranged in 304 quatrains, while sheltering in Wiltshire from the Great Plague of London. It commemorates the events of 1665–1666: three naval battles of the Second Anglo-Dutch War (Lowestoft in 1665, the Four Days' Battle and the St James's Day Battle in June and July 1666) and the Great Fire of London (2–7 September 1666).[2] The title is double-edged: 1666 was a year of plague and fire, not straightforward good fortune, and Dryden frames the events as disasters narrowly survived rather than as triumphs — "wonders" in the older sense of things to marvel at, not only happy miracles.[2]
Newton's annus mirabilis (1665–1667)
When Cambridge closed because of the plague, Isaac Newton spent nearly two years, from the summer of 1665 to the spring of 1667, at his family home in Woolsthorpe, Lincolnshire. The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy's entry on Newton states: "Newton spent all but three months from the summer of 1665 until the spring of 1667 at home in Woolsthorpe when the university was closed because of the plague. This period was his so-called annus mirabilis."[4]
In that period Newton worked out the calculus, presented in an October 1666 tract; made his first experimental discoveries in optics, including the decomposition of white light with a prism; and developed a mathematical theory of uniform circular motion, from which he derived the inverse-square relationship consistent with Kepler's rule connecting orbital period to distance from the sun — groundwork for the theory of gravitation he would publish two decades later in the Principia (1687).[4] As with Einstein's, the "annus mirabilis" label was applied by later historians of science, not claimed by Newton himself at the time.
Einstein's annus mirabilis (1905)
In 1905, while working as a patent clerk in Bern, Switzerland, the 26-year-old Albert Einstein published four papers in Annalen der Physik now collectively known as the annus mirabilis papers:[3]
- "On a Heuristic Point of View Concerning the Production and Transformation of Light" (received March 1905) — proposed light quanta and explained the photoelectric effect, the work cited for his 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics.
- "On the Motion of Small Particles Suspended in Liquids at Rest Required by the Molecular-Kinetic Theory of Heat" (May 1905) — explained Brownian motion as evidence for the atomic theory of matter.
- "On the Electrodynamics of Moving Bodies" (received 30 June 1905) — introduced special relativity.
- "Does the Inertia of a Body Depend on Its Energy Content?" (September 1905) — a short follow-up deriving mass–energy equivalence, E = mc².
Other applications and annus horribilis
The label has been applied, more loosely, to other years of concentrated achievement: 1492 (the fall of Granada and Columbus's voyage), 1543 (the same year Copernicus's De revolutionibus and Vesalius's De humani corporis fabrica were both published), 1759 (a string of British military victories during the Seven Years' War), and 1939 (often called Hollywood's "Golden Year" for the concentration of classic films released).[1]
The antonym, annus horribilis ("horrible year"), was popularized by Queen Elizabeth II in a speech at Guildhall on 24 November 1992, marking the 40th anniversary of her accession: "In the words of one of my more sympathetic correspondents, it has turned out to be an 'Annus Horribilis'."[5]
