Memex

Memex is a hypothetical electromechanical knowledge workstation conceptualized by Vannevar Bush in his 1945 essay As We May Think.[1] Designed to store an individual's complete library of books, records, and communications, the Memex introduced the foundational computing concept of associative indexing, allowing users to build persistent, non-linear trails through disparate documents.[2]

Physical and technical design

Bush conceived the Memex (a portmanteau of "memory" and "index") as a specialized desk containing mechanical, optical, and photographic components:[1]

Associative indexing and trails

The core innovation of the Memex was associative indexing. Bush observed that traditional library filing systems relied on artificial taxonomies (such as alphabetical order or numerical classification numbers) where an item could only reside in one fixed location.[1]

Context and motivation

As Director of the Office of Scientific Research and Development during World War II, Bush witnessed the exponential expansion of scientific literature and specialized research. He warned that traditional methods of transmitting and reviewing findings were failing to keep pace with scientific discovery.[1]

Bush proposed the Memex as an augmentation apparatus: a cognitive prosthetic designed to extend human memory and facilitate cross-disciplinary synthesis.

Influence on modern computing

While the electromechanical Memex was never manufactured, its theoretical framework catalyzed several fundamental breakthroughs in computer science:[2]
