Prosody in Reading

Prosody is the set of speech features that extend across more than one sound segment: intonation, stress, rhythm, loudness, and the timing of pauses.[1] In reading research the term covers three things: the cues a listener uses to group spoken words into phrases and resolve ambiguity,[2][3] the silent prosody a reader projects onto printed text,[4][5] and the expressive dimension of oral reading that fluency research treats as a marker of skill.[6] This entry covers each, the use of reading aloud as a check on phrasing, and what is known about prosody in autism.

Definition

In linguistics, prosody is the study of the elements of speech that occur at the same time as the individual vowels and consonants rather than being one of them: intonation, stress, rhythm, and loudness. When these elements extend across more than one segment they are called suprasegmentals, and the word prosody is often used for the features themselves.[1]

A 1997 review by Anne Cutler, Delphine Dahan, and Wilma van Donselaar divides research on prosody in comprehension into three areas: its use in recognising spoken words, its use in computing syntactic structure, where the resolution of global and local ambiguities has been the central focus, and its role in processing discourse structure, chiefly through accentuation and deaccentuation.[2] The second of these is the area this entry draws on.

Prosody in spoken-language comprehension

Words, like musical notes, are grouped into phrases by their rhythm, duration, and pitch. Lyn Frazier, Katy Carlson, and Charles Clifton call this grouping prosodic phrasing and state that it affects the understanding of sentences.[3] Earlier processing studies had used sentences with a single, grammatically required prosodic boundary, which could be read strictly locally as a signal to close the current syntactic unit. Their 2006 review argues from more recent results that the global pattern of prosodic phrasing is what matters in comprehension, not the occurrence or size of one boundary, so that the effect of any boundary depends on the other prosodic choices the speaker has made. They speculate that prosody serves to hold distinct linguistic representations together in memory.[3]

Implicit prosody in silent reading

Sentence-processing research at first set prosody aside, presenting experimental sentences visually and often without commas, in order to isolate syntax and semantics. Janet Dean Fodor argued in 2002 that this could not be sustained, because "Prosody is mentally projected by readers onto the written or printed word string" and is "then treated as if it were part of the input, so it can affect syntactic ambiguity resolution in the same way as overt prosody in speech does."[4] Her statement of the Implicit Prosody Hypothesis reads: "In silent reading, a default prosodic contour is projected onto the stimulus, and it may influence syntactic ambiguity resolution. Other things being equal, the parser favors the syntactic analysis associated with the most natural (default) prosodic contour for the construction."[4] The evidence she offered was cross-linguistic: the preferred attachment of a relative clause differs between languages such as English and Spanish, and the difference tracks where each language places a prosodic break.[4]

Mara Breen's 2014 review of the studies that followed describes the hypothesis as the claim that "even during silent reading, readers generate representations of sentence intonation, phrasing, stress, and rhythm, and that these representations can affect readers' interpretation of the text," and concludes that "the accumulated evidence suggests that implicit prosody can influence online sentence interpretation."[5]

Reading prosody as a dimension of fluency

In reading education, prosody names the expressive quality of oral reading. Melanie Kuhn, Paula Schwanenflugel, and Elizabeth Meisinger observe that fluent reading came to be seen as a central component of skilled reading, but that much of the attention went to a narrow definition built on automatic word recognition. Their 2010 article examines four definitions of fluency and their relationship to accuracy, automaticity, and prosody, and proposes a definition that includes all three.[6]

Two studies from the same group measured prosody directly. In 2004 Schwanenflugel and colleagues recorded the oral reading of 123 second- and third-grade children and 24 adults. Children who decoded faster made shorter and less variable pauses between sentences, shorter pauses within sentences, and larger pitch declinations at the ends of sentences, and their pitch profiles matched the adults' more closely. Two structural equation models found a relationship between decoding speed and prosody and between decoding speed and comprehension, but "only minimal evidence that prosodic reading was an important mediator of reading comprehension skill."[7]

A 2008 longitudinal study by Justin Miller and Schwanenflugel followed 92 children from the end of first grade to the end of third. Fewer pausal intrusions in first grade predicted an adult-like intonation contour in second grade; the intonation contour predicted later fluency once word reading was taken into account; and both the decrease in pausal intrusions and the early adult-like contour predicted better comprehension later. The authors read this as support for including prosody in formal definitions of oral reading fluency.[8]

Reading aloud as a check on phrasing

Because prosodic phrasing tracks syntactic structure, a reader who voices a sentence has to place its phrase boundaries, stresses, and pauses somewhere. If the sentence has been misparsed, the spoken phrasing lands at the wrong points, and the misplacement is audible to the reader in a way that a silent misparse is not. The studies above establish the link between phrasing and parsing in speech and in silent reading,[3][4] and the link between oral-reading prosody and reading skill in children.[7][8] They measure prosody as an outcome of skill, not as a self-check a reader applies on demand, and none of them tested adult readers of technical text.

The mechanism described above, and the use of deliberate oral reading as a check on parsing switched on only for sentences that resist silent reading, are the author's own account. No study cited in this entry tested them.

Prosody in autism

Many autistic people are described as having unusual or odd-sounding prosody. Joanne McCann and Sue Peppé's 2003 critical review set out to establish whether there is a prosodic disorder in autism and what can be generalised about it. They found the area under-researched, the findings of existing studies often in conflict, and the methods highly variable. Most research had covered prosodic expression; some more recent studies covered comprehension, processing, and the relation of receptive prosodic ability to theory of mind.[9] The review concerns spoken prosody. None of the reading studies in this entry sampled autistic readers.

Limits

Three limits follow from the sources. The fluency studies sampled children in the early grades, so their findings describe how prosody develops alongside decoding, not how a skilled adult uses it.[7][8] The 2004 study found only minimal evidence that prosody mediates comprehension, so expressive reading may signal skill more than it produces it.[7] And the implicit-prosody literature shows that projected prosody can influence interpretation, which cuts both ways: a reader who projects the wrong contour onto an ambiguous sentence can be led to the wrong parse by it.[4][5]
