Andy Matuschak

Andy Matuschak is an American software engineer, interface designer, and researcher whose work investigates tools for thought, cognitive augmentation, and educational interfaces.[1] He is widely known for formalizing evergreen notes, designing sliding-pane hypertext navigation, and co-creating mnemonic mediums that integrate spaced repetition directly into expository reading.[2]

Career and research background

Early in his career, Matuschak worked at Apple on the iOS user interface team, contributing to foundational system design patterns for mobile computing. He later joined Khan Academy as head of research and development, where he explored interactive learning environments and feedback loops in educational software.

Following his tenure at Khan Academy, Matuschak transitioned to independent research supported by institutions including Y Combinator Research and Protocol Labs. His research agenda centers on building interactive systems that extend human memory, conceptual understanding, and creative synthesis.[1]

The mnemonic medium

In collaboration with quantum physicist Michael Nielsen, Matuschak developed the concept of the mnemonic medium.[2] Traditional books and essays present information linearly, assuming the reader will remember key concepts, yet cognitive science shows that human recall decays rapidly without structured review.

The mnemonic medium embeds interactive recall prompts directly within narrative text. In their experimental quantum computing book, Quantum Country (2019), readers answered embedded flashcard questions whose review schedule was managed automatically by a spaced repetition algorithm.[3] This architecture transformed reading from passive consumption into durable long-term retention with minimal extra effort.

Evergreen notes and thinking in public

Matuschak developed the concept of evergreen notes while building his own public digital notebook.[4] Drawing inspiration from Niklas Luhmann's Zettelkasten, Matuschak adapted analog slip-box constraints for digital hypertext systems.

His framework establishes four core design rules for personal knowledge notes:

Spatial hypertext and sliding panes

When publishing his personal notes online, Matuschak rejected standard single-page tab interfaces in favor of horizontally scrolling sliding panes. As a reader clicks internal links, new notes open side-by-side in adjacent panels rather than replacing the active document.

This spatial arrangement preserves reading context, reveals trails of associative thought, and reflects Vannevar Bush's historical vision of associative trails in the Memex. The sliding pane interaction pattern was subsequently adopted across modern note-taking applications, including the popular "Andy Mode" plugin in Obsidian.
